Clinical Guidelines

Official and recognised set of rules and regulations applied in clinical setting.

Consortium

A collective of organisations working together towards the same aim. In the case of NWeH the shared aim is the improvement of healthcare.

Data Repository

Contains all of the healthcare data recorded. Local NHS data repositories, which are locally updated and managed, will feed into the e-Lab repository where they will be anonymised.

Electronic health records

refers to an individual patient's medical record in digital format.

e-Science

is used to describe computationally intensive science that is carried out in highly distributed network environments.

Federation

A granted access to a number of local e-Labs, with the aim of gaining improved overview through the usage of the variety of the data sources.

General Practitioner (GP)

Your doctor at your local surgery who provides primary care and specialises in family medicine.

Metadata

is "data about other data", of any sort in any media. Metadata is used to facilitate the understanding, characteristics, & management usage of data.

Ontology

Ontology deals with questions concerning what entities exist and how such entities can be grouped, related within a hierarchy, and subdivided according to similarities and differences.

Primary Care Trust

A type of NHS trust which provides primary and community services as well as commissioning secondary care i.e. your local doctors surgery which can provide initial treatment or refer you to a local hospital if required.

Research Objects

An electronic container that captures and archives a users work, enabling sharing and collaboration. The questions to be answered, the data queries, the analysis and the results are collected together. Research Objects are created for users as a part of the approvals process for accessing data. The Research Object defines and restricts the queries that a user can perform to access the data.

Security/Confidentiality

Restriction of access to and anonymity of the healthcare data, abiding by the Data Protection Act.
