Mixed paper and electronic clinical systems are worst of both worlds, says Health Foundation
Health professionals who rely on a mixture of paper and electronic clinical information systems often do not know where to look for information such as test results, compromising patient safety as a result.
A study by the Health Foundation highlighted the need for reliable clinical information systems and warned that missing information poses a threat to patient safety.
In the study, 15% of outpatient appointments were affected by missing information and in one in five of them doctors judged that there was a risk to patient safety.
It says: “There were particular problems if there were two parallel systems, one paper and one electronic; staff often did not know where they should look for test results.”
